Guided Fly Fishing · Rockport, TX
The Lighthouse Lakes maze and Redfish Bay flats — wind-protected, sight-cast redfish on a poled skiff.
Rockport Area Fly Fishing
Aransas Pass sits right between Rockport and Port Aransas, and for a fly angler it’s the doorway to some of the most fabled backcountry on the Texas coast — the Lighthouse Lakes.
DM Fly Fishing runs this maze of mangrove-lined flats and the surrounding Redfish Bay year-round, sight-casting redfish, speckled trout, and black drum on the fly. The Lighthouse Lakes are a shallow, protected labyrinth of interconnected lakes and cuts wrapped in black mangrove — one of the few places on the coast that fishes clean even when the wind is up.
That protection is exactly why it’s special: while the open bays get chopped and muddy, these back lakes stay fishable, holding tailing redfish in water barely deep enough to float a skiff. Just outside, the broader Redfish Bay flats open up for anglers who want more room to hunt cruising fish.
The signature fish of these flats — tailing and cruising in inches of water.
Over the grass and along the deeper edges of the lakes.
Common on the same flats and a great early-season sight-casting target.
The Lighthouse Lakes were practically made for shallow-water fly fishing. Wind protection, clear water, and skinny flats add up to long looks at fish and honest sight-casting shots — the kind of fishing that rewards a good cast and a stalking, hunting approach.
It’s the spot we lean on when a north wind shuts down the open bays, and a genuinely special place to land your first redfish on a fly.
We fish from a poled skiff — 100% sight casting, with Captain Dylan Mendoza on the platform spotting fish and putting you in position. All fly gear, flies, and water are included, and trips are built around the day’s tide and wind so you’re on the right water at the right time.
See our guided trips and rates, weigh a half day versus a full day, then reach out with your dates. Nearby options: Port Aransas and the Upper Laguna Madre.
Good to know
Black-mangrove cover breaks the wind and keeps the water clean and shallow, so you get long, clear sight-casting shots at tailing redfish — even on days when the open bays are blown out.
It’s our go-to when the wind is up, especially a north wind. The protected back lakes stay fishable when bigger water turns rough and muddy.
Absolutely. Close shots, calm water, and on-the-bow coaching make it one of the best places on the coast to catch a first redfish on the fly.
It sits just south of Rockport, between Rockport and Port Aransas — a short run that makes it easy to work into a Rockport-based day.
Redfish are the headline fish, with speckled trout and black drum on the same flats depending on the season and tide.
