Fly Fishing
Rockport

Home water. An interconnected estuary of grass flats, oyster reefs and tidal marsh — and redfish that thrive here through every stage of the tide, year round.

Rockport Area Fly Fishing

Rockport is home water — the majority of our trips run right here. This interconnected estuary creates an enormous variety of habitat, from turtle grass flats and sand pockets to oyster reefs and tidal marshes, allowing redfish to thrive throughout every stage of the tide. Year round.

The water around Rockport

The variety is the point. A falling tide pulls fish off the marsh drains and stacks them along the reef edges; a rising tide pushes them up onto the turtle grass and into the sand pockets where you can see a tail from thirty feet away. There is almost always somewhere to hide from the wind, and almost always a stage of the tide working somewhere in the system.

That’s what makes it home base. Shallow, clear, and close — most half-day trips launch and fish right here, and it’s the water we know foot by foot.

What you’ll cast to

  • Redfish

The headliner. Tailing and cruising the grass flats, sand pockets and marsh edges through every stage of the tide, year round.

  • Speckled Trout

Over turtle grass and along the reef edges — a steady sight-casting target on clean water.

  • Black Drum

Reliable tailing fish on the shallow flats, and a forgiving first target on the fly.

When to fish it

Rockport fishes year round. Spring through fall is prime — warm water, strong tides and tailing fish on the flats — but the winter months bring gin-clear water and some of the best sight fishing of the year for anglers who don’t mind a layer or two.

Tide and wind set the plan every day. Because the estuary holds so many kinds of habitat within a short run, there’s usually a protected, fishable stage of the tide somewhere in the system.

Your day on the water

Trips run from a poled Hell’s Bay skiff — 100% sight casting, with Captain Dylan Mendoza spotting and positioning from the platform. All fly gear, flies, and water are included, and all skill levels are welcome.

Start with our guided trips and rates. A half day covers the home flats well; a full day opens up more water. Send your dates and we’ll build the day. We also fish Port Aransas, the Lighthouse Lakes, Port O’Connor and the Upper Laguna Madre.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

Why do most trips run out of Rockport?

It’s home water. The estuary packs turtle grass flats, sand pockets, oyster reefs and tidal marsh into a short run, so there’s almost always a productive, protected stage of the tide somewhere in the system.

What will I be casting to?

Redfish are the headliner year round, with speckled trout over the grass and reef edges and black drum tailing on the shallow flats.

When is the best time to fish Rockport?

Rockport fishes year round. Spring through fall is prime, but winter brings gin-clear water and outstanding sight fishing if you’re willing to layer up.

Should I book a half day or a full day?

A half day covers the Rockport home flats well and is the most common choice. A full day gives you more water and more shots, and it’s required if you want to run to Port O’Connor or the Upper Laguna Madre.

Is it beginner-friendly?

Yes. The protected Rockport flats are the gentlest place on this coast to learn — shallow, clear, and close to the ramp. All skill levels are welcome, and tailing black drum and reds are forgiving first targets.
