Fly Fishing
Laguna Madre

Gin-clear flats and world-class trophy trout — pure sight-casting on the Upper Laguna & Baffin.

Rockport Area Fly Fishing

Hypersaline flats, expansive seagrass meadows and gin-clear water. Protected for generations by the renowned King and Kenedy ranches, its undeveloped shoreline offers a rare glimpse of the Texas coast much as it existed over a century ago.

The water: Upper Laguna & Baffin Bay

This is the clearest, most technical water we fish. The Upper Laguna’s turtle-grass flats and sand pockets let you spot fish from a long way off — and the fish can spot you, too, which is exactly what makes it such a pure sight-casting game. It’s a hunt: cover water, pick out a fish, make the cast count.

To the south, Baffin Bay adds its famous rock formations and drop-offs that grow the biggest speckled trout on the Texas coast. Tailing redfish, black drum, and cruising trophy trout all show on these flats, and in clean, calm conditions the sight-fishing is as good as it gets anywhere in Texas.

What you’ll cast to

  • Trophy Speckled Trout

The Upper Laguna and Baffin are legendary big-trout water — sight-cast in clear, skinny flats.

  • Redfish

Tailing and cruising the grass flats and sand pockets in inches of water.

  • Black Drum

A steady sight-casting target that tails right alongside the reds.

When to fish it

The Upper Laguna sight-fishes well much of the year, but the clear, calm windows are the ones to chase — that’s when the flats light up and the big trout are most catchable. Winter and early spring are prime for trophy trout; the warmer months bring steady redfish and black drum on the flats.

Clarity is everything here, so wind and light set the day. When it lines up, few places on the coast offer better shots at a truly big fish on the fly.

Your day on the water

We fish from a poled skiff — 100% sight casting, with Captain Dylan Mendoza on the platform reading the water and spotting fish. All fly gear, flies, and water are included. The Laguna rewards patience and a good presentation, and Dylan will put you in position for the best shots the day offers.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

Why is the Upper Laguna Madre so well known?

Gin-clear, hypersaline flats and the rock structure of Baffin Bay combine to grow — and let you sight-cast to — some of the largest speckled trout in the country. It’s a bucket-list fishery for fly anglers who love hunting fish.

What’s the best time of year for trophy trout?

Winter and early spring are classic big-trout windows, when calm, clear conditions put the biggest fish in reach on the flats. Redfish and black drum fish well through the warmer months.

Do I need to be an experienced caster?

The clear water is demanding — fish see well and shots can be long — so it favors anglers who can deliver a fly with some accuracy. If you’re newer, we’ll start you on more forgiving water and build up to it.

Is the Upper Laguna a longer run from Rockport?

It’s a run to the south, so we typically fish it as a full day to make the most of the water and the clear-water windows.

What species will we target?

Trophy speckled trout are the signature fish, with redfish and black drum tailing the same flats. It’s primarily a sight-casting trip.
