Frying Pan River

The Frying Pan River is a small tributary of the Roaring Fork River approximately 42 miles long. It originates in northeastern Pitkin County, in the White River National Forest along the western side of the continental divide. It dammed below Meredith to form Ruedi Reservoir. Below the reservoir is the start of the Gold Medal tail-water of the Frying Pan.

The Gold Medal portion of the Frying Pan is 14 miles long that flows westward into the Roaring Fork in the town of Basalt. It acquired its unusual name when a group of trappers were attacked by a group of Ute Indians. Only two men survived, and one was injured. Leaving the injured one behind in a cave to summon help, he hung a frying pan in a tree so that he could find the cave on his return.

The Frying Pan is a wade only river with very easy roadside access. It has very consistent mayfly hatches throughout the summer. Pale Morning Duns and Green Drakes are the most prominent. As a result, the dry fly fishing can be outstanding during the summer months. I am in Colorado offering wade trips through Frying Pan Anglers from June-October. Please book your days well in advance to ensure I will be available throughout these months.
